For nine years, we have created butterfly gardens, habitats, and parks for others. No space was ours. We don't maintain such sites, therefore we have little control over what happens after we depart. Since we could afford to self-fund this garden, we decided to build a garden to create legacy of Butterfly Man of India- Isaac Kehimkar.
The 1.25 acre land in Tembhare Village (Karjat) belongs to Isaac Kehimkar; he has held it for decades. Most butterfly gardens are named after their proprietors, who were trained by Isaac Kehimkar, so it makes sense that Isaac can do the same. We intend to develop this into a tourist spot.
Gardens like this offer four functions: aesthetic, ecological, educational, and wellness.
On our inaugural Earth Day celebration at Kehimkar's Butterfly Garden, we united with student volunteers from Vijaybhoomi University to invest in our environment.
Our focus was the butterfly garden's dry stream, where we took on the invasive Mexican Poppy (A. mexicana). With dedication, students uprooted and buried these plants. Students didn't stop there. They built a checkdam, combating erosion, regulating water flow, and recharging groundwater.By freeing the stream from Mexican Poppy's grasp and fortifying it with a checkdam, students invest in cleaner streams.
