Mumbai has a number of beaches to boast about and Chimbai beach is one of them. Chimbai is the forgotten beach of Mumbai with a history of 400 years. The beach is a mix of rocky and sandy shore with few mangroves. Mumbai beaches are rich in biodiversity and Chimbai beach is no less. Our sister organization Ladybird Environmental Consulting has been conducting a two year project 'Rejuvenation of Chimbai beach' where they have carried out perception surveys, marine, microplastic and crab count surveys. This is a joint initiative of United Way Mumbai and their corporate donor. The current project addresses rejuvenation of Chimbai beach through clean up drives, biodiversity surveys, bio-shielding and community engagement.
As part of public awareness programmes, arine iNaturewatch Foundation is conducting free marine walks for schools and colleges at Chimbai Beach. The aim of these walks to reach out 300 students and make them aware about the marine life existing in so called -dirtiest beach of Mumbai. So far 32 marine species such as Gastropods, Blue buttons, Molluscs, Sea anemones, Crabs, Sponges and many more have been recorded.
