INTRODUCTION
Big Butterfly Month in India is an initiative dedicated to the observation, conservation, and celebration of butterflies and their habitats. This month-long event typically takes place in September, which marks the beginning of the butterfly season in many parts of India. The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of butterflies in ecosystems, their role as pollinators, and their significance in indicating the health of the environment.
Duration: 1 September- 30 September.
Locations: Taloja Hills, Kharghar | Sanjay Gandhi National Park Mulund Range | Ambivli Biodiversity Park, Kalyan
Who Can Participate? Our event is open to participants of all age groups – from the curious young minds to the seasoned nature enthusiasts, everyone is welcome to join us in this celebration of butterflies.
How to Register? Joining us for this butterfly extravaganza is simple! Just keep following us on social media we will be posting the registration link for different activities there.
(i) 1-30 Sep 2023: iButterflies Citizen Science Programme:
1. Participants of the iButterflies Citizen Science Programme will receive comprehensive guidance on effectively utilizing the iButterfly mobile app to record their butterfly sightings.
2. Our initiative encourages participants to focus on documenting butterfly species that inhabit the designated sites.
3. An exceptional incentive awaits the keen participants, as a Certificate of Achievement will be bestowed upon the individual who successfully documents the highest number of distinct butterfly species during the programme.
(ii) 2 Sep 2023: Online Butterfly Identification Workshop
1. Participants will gain valuable knowledge about the art of identifying butterflies, including insights into their distinctive behaviors and the intricate patterns on their wings.
(iii) 3 Sep 2023: Butterfly Watching Saunter at Taloja Hill Forest:
1. We will organize a guided butterfly watching walk at our ecorestoration site.
2. Participants can learn about different butterfly species, their life cycles, and the importance of native plants for their survival.
(iv) 14 Sep 2023: Butterfly Habitat Restoration at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mulund:
1. Participants will have the opportunity to discover various butterfly species and gain insights into their unique life cycles.
2. Participant will learn about the importance of native plants for their survival and the role they play in maintaining butterfly populations.
(v) 24 Sep 2023: Butterfly Garden Party at Ambivli Biodiversity Park:
We will set up a butterfly-themed garden party where attendees can enjoy refreshments amidst beautiful butterflies fluttering around.
